TV Ratings: ‘American Idol’ finale trounces Wednesday competition

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

The season finale of “American Idol” averaged more than 27.7 million viewers for FOX on Wednesday night, ending another successful run for TV’s most watched show.

Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged a 9.5 rating, far better than the combined total for the other four networks. CBS was second with a 2.8 rating, followed by the 1.3 rating for NBC and ABC’s 1.2 rating. The CW trailed with a 0.4 rating.

Overall, FOX averaged the aforementioned 27.71 million viewers to go with a 15.6 rating/26 share. CBS was a distant second with a 7.0/12. NBC’s 3.7/6 and the 2.2/4 for ABC followed. The CW’s 0.9/1 was good for last.

In the 8 p.m. hour “American Idol” did a 13.8/24 for FOX. CBS’ “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Gary Unmarried” had a 3.7/7 for second. NBC’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” repeat took third, beating the 2.2/4 for the first hour of ABC’s broadcast of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequel. The CW movie “Take the Lead” was fifth with a 0.9/2.

“Idol” improved to a 17.3/27 for FOX in the 9 p.m. hour, with CBS’ “Criminal Minds” taking second with a 7.8/12. NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” repeat had a 3.0/5, beating the movies on both ABC and The CW.

CBS closed in first with a 9.4/16 for “Criminal Minds” in the 10 p.m. hour. NBC’s “Law & Order” was second with a 4.7/8, leaving ABC’s movie in third.
