TV Ratings: FOX’s ‘Idol’ and ‘Lie’ carry Wednesday

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009.

Just as FOX’s “Fringe” did a better-than-average job of holding onto its “American Idol” lead on Tuesday, the freshman drama “Lie to Me” drew extra well after “Idol” on Wednesday.

As a result, FOX dominated the night in the 18-49 demographic, doing a 7.3 rating. ABC was second in the key demo with a 2.8 rating. CBS and NBC’s 1.9 ratings followed, while The CW trailed with a 0.4 rating.

Overall, FOX averaged an estimated 19.64 million viewers and an 11.4 rating/18 share. CBS was a distant second with a 5.2/8, followed closely by NBC’s 4.5/7 and the 4.4/7 for ABC. The CW’s 0.7/1 was a distant fifth.

FOX kicked the night off in first with a 14.9/23 for “American Idol,” which averaged 26.26 million viewers. CBS was second with a 5.7/9 for a repeat of “Criminal Minds.” NBC’s “Knight Rider” took third, nipping ABC’s “Lost” repeat and the 0.6/1 for a “Privileged” repeat on The CW.

“Lie to Me” carried the 9 p.m. hour for FOX with a 7.8/12 for the hour. ABC’s new “Lost” was second with a 6.4/10. CBS took third the 4.6/7 for a Katie Couric special, nipping the 4.3/7 for the return of “Life” on NBC. The CW’s “90210” repeat trailed.

NBC grabbed first in the 10 p.m. hour with a 5.8/10 for “Law & Order.” CBS’ “CSI: NY” was second with a 5.1/9. ABC’s “Life on Mars” was third with a 3.7/6.
