TV Ratings: Sunday rivals ‘Desperate’ to keep up with ABC

Fast National ratings for Sunday, April 26, 2009.

Thanks to Sunday’s highest rated program, “Desperate Housewives,” ABC won the night in the key demo and eked out an overall tie with the night’s normal victor, CBS.

ABC averaged a 3.2 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, topping the 2.2 rating for both FOX and CBS. NBC’s 2.0 rating followed closely, while The CW’s 0.3 rating followed not-so-closely.

Overall, CBS averaged a 6.2 rating/11 share, while ABC averaged a 6.2/10. CBS’ estimated average viewership of 10.01 million nipped the 9.8 million for ABC. NBC was a distant third with a 4.3/7, with FOX’s 2.7/5 good for fourth. The CW was fifth with a 0.7/1.

CBS kicked the night off in first with a 6.7/13 for “60 Minutes.” ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos” was second with a 4.4/8 and won the hour in the 18-49 demo. NBC’s “Dateline” was second, far outdoing the 1.6/3 averaged by FOX’s “American Dad” repeat and a new “King of the Hill.” The CW’s “Jericho” repeat had a 0.4/1 for the hour.

“The Amazing Race” won the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.0/10 for CBS. ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was second, far ahead of the 3.6/6 for “Dateline NBC.” FOX’s “The Simpsons” (3.5/6) and “Sit Down, Shut Up” (2.5/4) were fourth. The CW’s Random Sunday Movie, “4 Weddings and a Funeral,” was fifth.

“Desperate Housewives” controled the 9 p.m. hour for ABC, doing an 8.5/13. CBS’ “Cold Case” was second with a 6.5/10, followed by the first hour of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” New episodes of “Family Guy” and “American Dad” averaged a 3.5/5 for FOX. The CW’s movie had a 0.8/1.

At 10 p.m. ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters” carried the hour with a 6.4/11. NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” and CBS’ “The Unit” were tied with a 5.6/9, though the CBS show had more viewers and the NBC reality series won the hour in the 18-49 demo.
