Already a literary phenomenon and a theatrical film phenomenon, “Twilight” has now become a DVD phenomenon as well.

“Twilight” was released on DVD on Saturday, March 21 and promptly sold more than 3 million units in its first day in release. This instantly moved “Twilight” into a position among the Top Five first day DVD releases of the past two years, joining “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” “The Dark Knight,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Transformers” on the arbitrarily compiled list.

The “Twilight” release figures were goosed by a number of “Twilight” At Midnight events thrown by Summit Entertainment and retailers. Those events drew big crowds around the country, particularly if you happened to be in a market that welcomed special guest appearances by “Twilight” stars.

Rachelle Lefevre, for example, surprised the 2500 fans who showed up in Salt Lake City. A Los Angeles crowd of 2000 greeted Ashley Greene. Only 500 fans in Chicago saw Nikki Reed, but that still isn’t bad.

“The Saturday release in conjunction with the groundbreaking retail events across the country have proven to be overwhelmingly successful which in turn benefited ‘Twilight’ fans as well as our retail partners,” say Summit Entertainment’s Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement.

Adds Steve Nickerson, Summit’s president for Home Entertainment, “We are incredibly appreciative that ‘Twilight’ fans came out to once again support this film at our midnight events across the nation. With such a successful first day sales, it is apparent that our fans remain passionate about the ‘Twilight Saga’ and want to own a piece of the Edward and Bella story they have come to love. We look forward to the continued success for both the home entertainment and retail sales of this property as a whole.”

“Twilight,” which hit theaters last November, has grossed nearly $380 million worldwide.

Production has just begun on “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which will open on Nov. 20, 2009.

After a brief pause to recharge, production will then begin on the franchise’s third installment, “Eclipse,” which has staked out a June 30, 2010 release date.
