Watch: Hailee Steinfeld keeps the ‘star is born’ story going with ‘True Grit’

Anna Paquin, Tatum O’Neal, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Abigail Breslin and…Hailee Steinfeld?   Just like those young ladies, the “True Grit” newcomer seems poised to land an Oscar nomination for one of her first major screen roles and it turns out she’s more than deserving of such high praise.

The 14-year-old was cast for the role after a nationwide search to find an actress who could play the stubborn  Mattie Ross, a young woman looking to hunt down the man who killed her father in the Coen bros’ adaptation of Charles Portis’ Western novel “True Grit.”  Whoever landed the part was going to have to be able to stand up on screen against such heavyweights as Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin — no easy task for an actor no matter what your age.

HitFix’s Melinda Newman sat down with the delightful Steinfeld and talked about Mattie’s hidden vulnerability, riding horses, the physical difficulties of the role and playing pass the pigs with Jeff Bridges.  You can watch it embedded within this post.

You only have to look at the reviews to see that “True Grit,” along with “The King’s Speech,” is one of the only truly good movies opening on nationwide on Christmas day.  And if you do venture out for a return the Old West, Miss Steinfeld’s gutsy turn may be what you remember most.
