Proving he was serious when he said he didn’t want to be pigeonholed in musical or teen roles and thereby turned the title role in “Footloose” down, Zac Efron has now agreed to star in an untitled thriller for Mandate Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the details of the “sexy” thriller are being kept under wraps, but the project will reunite Efron with screenwriter Leslie Dixon who also penned the movie adaptation of the musical “Hairspray.”   The film will also mark Efron’s first foray into producing as he’s been granted an executive producer title.

Neither a start date or director is on board, but Efron already has “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud” on his slate.  That Universal Pictures project reunites Efron with his “17 Again” director Burr Steers.  “Again” was a solid hit for New Line with over $63 million at the box office.

Strangely, there is still no word on when Efron’s “Me and Orson Welles,” which premiered almost a year ago at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, will get a domestic U.S. release.
