Sir Charles Wants to be Your Next GM

By 06.14.10

The man who has single-handedly saved Taco Bell’s sales in North America is ready to take his talents to an NBA front office. The Round Mound of Rebound has gone on record to say that he would, in fact, be interested in becoming the GM of an NBA franchise, as long as said franchise meets his expectations.

The itch to delve into management has increased for the Hall of Famer and he feels qualified to run his own team. But he has a list of stipulations. Barkley is not going to take over a team that has no intentions of winning.

And the Chuckster wants full control.

“I’m ready to get into management,’’ he said before last night’s game. “But it’s going to have to be a great situation. I’m not going to give up a great situation for a bad situation. I got a great situation here but I’m ready to be a GM. It’s just time for that, but like I said, it’s going to have to be under my own terms and I am going to have to have complete control. I ain’t going to work for somebody else if I am going to get the blame.’’ –Boston.com

Charles won’t take no guff from nobody, and he shouldn’t. He’s a straight shooter who keeps it real. Why should he expect to answer to anybody who wears a fancy suit and “went to college?” Sir Charles got his bachelor’s from the school of hard knocks, and was kind enough detail what he wants in an organization.

“It would have to be an organization that I trust that is trying to win,’’ he said. “The biggest misconception about sports is that all these teams are trying to win. Some of these teams are just trying to make money, across the board in all sports. I want to be in a situation where I can be successful because like I said, I got a great situation here.’’

Barkley has talked with some teams but he is not going to “go out of my way’’ to seek a management job. He believes his reputation and knowledge should speak for itself, and, added, the league has “hired worse guys than me.’’

“I know I would do a good job, but the key is you’ve got to surround yourself with good people,’’ he said. –Boston.com

Now I don’t consider myself to be an expert in negotiations, but I’m pretty sure that Chuck doesn’t have a pot to piss in, and would be lucky to get even a single offer on the table. Organizations aren’t too keen to the idea of making a guy with a DUI on his record the GM of their team. I’d also bet that they aren’t too big on the idea of putting a guy who blew $10 million gambling in charge of their team’s finances.

That being said, I love the idea of Chuck managing an NBA franchise. He may not always make good life decisions, but it would certainly be entertaining. And he does have a point about teams hiring guys worse than him. Even if he was wasted the whole time, he’d still do a better job than Isiah Thomas.
