NBA teams are famous for putting together intriguing care packages for voters in an effort to promote their own players for certain awards. In a season in which the MVP race is perhaps the most interesting and divisive that it has ever been, that will certainly happen if it hasn’t already. The Milwaukee Bucks are taking a different approach, and it came as a directive from their Rookie of the Year candidate.

Malcolm Brogdon, who is in the mix alongside Joel Embiid and Dario Saric for the award, reportedly asked the Bucks to direct any dollars they would have assigned to promoting his candidacy and put them in the direction of a charitable gift.

This is a story that fits perfectly with the reputation of Brogdon, who has taken the league by storm as a 24-year-old second round draft choice. The former Virginia star was seen as “NBA-ready” by prospect standards, but Brogdon has exceeded any rational expectation in serving as a crucial piece for the Bucks. He’s averaging 10.3 points and 4.3 assists per game to go along with quality defensive impact.

More than that, though, Brogdon is reportedly a fantastic off-court influence to the point where his public nickname is “The President” even as a rookie in the league. At this point, it would probably be a minor surprise if Brogdon unseats the pair of Philadelphia 76ers’ rookies for the top spot in the final ROY balloting, but this move will certainly endear him to many voters and fans.
