Was the world really hungry for another revamp of the Mummy franchise? It’s hard to say, but Universal is definitely pouring all they have into this latest reboot, which they hope will launch an entire classic horror universe. With production of The Mummy in full swing, Universal has released an official synopsis for the film:

“Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of The Mummy. Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”

That sounds fairly similar to the older movies, except with a gender-swapped Mummy, although there are a few interesting tidbits in there. “Terrors that defy human comprehension” may just be overheated marketing speak, but it does sound like this will be a darker take on the material than the mostly-peppy Brendan Fraser films. It also sounds like a good chunk of The Mummy will take place in England, rather than being entirely Egyptian-based (recent set pics seem to back that up).

The Mummy stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, Knights of the Round Table) and Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) as various heroes, and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) as the titular Mummy. Russell Crowe may also be making a cameo as Dr. Jekyll, planting the seeds for a spin-off. The Mummy is expected to shamble into theaters June 9, 2017.
