Emily Blunt Is A Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Choice To Play Mary Poppins

Emily Blunt dipped her toes into the water that is movie musicals with Into the Woods. The Rob Marshall-directed film wasn’t very good (probably because it was directed by Rob Marshall), but Blunt was excellent in it.

That’s not a surprise to anyone who’s seen Edge of Tomorrow, or Sicario, or Looper. Blunt has a rare talent to go from high-concept science fiction and thrillers, to romantic comedies (The Five-Year Engagement is one of those “if it’s on TV, I’m watching” movies), to singing nonsense words, which will come in handy when she reportedly plays Mary Poppins in Disney’s sequel.

Emily Blunt is in talks to star in Disney’s sequel to Mary Poppins with Rob Marshall set to direct… Sources say Blunt has always been the favorite [since] Into the Woods. With Disney looking to get the film into production soon, the studio recently met with the actress to discuss the idea of playing the magical nanny.

The deal is not yet set in stone due to scheduling. News recently broke that Blunt is expecting her second child, and that may play into her decision. (Via)

The sequel takes place 20 years after the original in Depression-era London, and will focus “on Poppins’ continued adventures with the Banks family.” Blunt is a practically perfect choice in every way to play the inspiration for Shary Bobbins, and considering Dick Van Dyke hasn’t aged a day in 40 years, he can reprise his role as Bert, the lovable chimney sweep. As for the dancing penguins, they all died in the Great Dancing Penguin Fire of ’84. If Disney wants penguins, they’ll have to paint Anna Kendrick black and white.
