‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Goes Full ‘Robot Chicken’ To Debut Its New Toys

One of the nice touches of the Star Wars marketing machine is that it has a sense of humor. In between the more serious trailers and plot reveals, we’ve gotten recaps of The Force Awakens done in emoji and Lego adorably filling in the bits between movies. And now, to debut the toys, they’ve decided to take a page from Robot Chicken and make a not entirely serious fan film starring the Rogue One crew and lots and lots of the toys being made out of them.

It looks so smooth in part because they brought in professionals, including crew members from Anomalisa, Paranorman, and the How It Should Have Ended webseries. It takes roughly 10 hours of shooting to put out six seconds of animation in this style, and this is two minutes long. But the work was worth it: Keep an ear out, in particular, for Jyn Erso dropping one of the most notorious burns in the Star Wars canon.

The nice part is that they use the toys but this isn’t an ad. Everything looks cool, and over the next three parts, building up to Rogue One‘s toys arriving on September 30, we’ll see even more. But it’s not trying to get us to buy Jyn Erso Legos, it’s just using the toys to do something cool. Now, about those Lego Stormtroopers getting their own spinoff…
