Just days after announcing an epic retirement tour, Elton John gave the world a taste of what they will be missing when one of music’s ultimate icons hangs up his giant sunglasses and bedazzled suits for good. Of course, the performance at the 2018 Grammys also included one big element that fans won’t find at his reunion tour: Miley Cyrus.
Fresh off the release last year’s Younger Now, which saw a move to the country sound she surely grew up with, neither Cyrus nor John had much at stake with the actual awards part of the ceremony. And maybe that’s what made the performance feel so special, because neither were simply on hand for the possibility of receiving statues.
Opting to perform John’s beloved 1972 song “Tiny Dancer,” the pair breathed new life into the song in a way that hasn’t been done since the cast of Almost Famous sang it on a tour bus. Here, Cyrus’ booming vocals complimenting John’s perfectly. And, maybe best, is that the combo didn’t hold any of the problematic elements that Elton’s previous Grammy duet with Eminem did.
