Metallica fans are sometimes guilty of being more fiercely protective of the band’s image than the group itself. We’re currently in the middle of another steady wave of metal band t-shirts being in fashion and Metallica frontman James Hetfield has chimed in on the subject of fancy celebrity types wearing the band’s merch.
Chatting with Buzzfeed Mexico, Hetfield was presented with a series of images featuring celebz (our betters!) sporting Metallica gear. Playing the role of dad-like fashion critic, Hetfield provided his take on stars like Mary-Kate Olsen (“She’s too cute for the new album, I dunno.”) done up in band tees and was more self-effacing than harsh in responding to millionaires owning a Metallica tee. It’s almost as if the band has placed items for sale so folks would buy them.
“That’s the singer for Nickelback, right?” teases Hetfield when he comes across a picture of Avril Lavigne. “Well, she’s got ‘The Unforgiven’ shirt on. She might like that song. I think she’s a fan. I’ve met her. She’s nice.”
Hetfield also provides his take on Kim Kardashian, Ryan Gosling and Michael Clifford from 5 Seconds of Summer wearing Metallica t-shirts in the interview, although it’s the Load/Reload era of the band that might get the roughest ride from the exercise. Gaze upon the magic for yourself.
