Those who watched Sunday evening’s MTV VMAs know that Kanye West was not only seriously unimpressed with Macklemore’s performance, but he also took his time giving a speech for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. When all was said and done, Yeezus delivered an 11-minute sermon to a bemused crowd.
As Miley Cyrus put it, “Now we all know what happens to Kanye West when he smokes weed.” This wasn’t the most on-point joke, for we all know, the man can talk (whether or not weed is involved). Not only is Kanye impressed by the sound of his own voice, he took it upon himself to interrupt Taylor Swift’s Moonman speech in 2009. We all remember this moment like it was the birth of Yeezus.
For all of Swift’s subsequent beefing within the industry, she handled that moment like a pro. Kanye also fake-interrupted Beck at the 2015 Grammy ceremony. So, the moment was ripe for someone (anyone) to interrupt Kanye’s greatest moment (of all-time) on the VMAs stage. Sadly, that did not happen, but Twitter had great fun calling out West’s not-so-swift speech. Leading the charge was Justin Timberlake, and the rest of the audience soon followed.
