'BAMA BEATS TEXAS TONIGHT…

I don’t mean to get all crabby about the BCS title game tonight, but it’s been over a month since we’ve seen any really significant college football. And tonight, despite being billed as a National Championship, won’t be any different. This will have the feel of a spring scrimmage for people not emotionally invested in either team, uncompelling and somewhat out of place. Uncompelling? That’s a word, right?

I won’t bring up the P-word here, but I’d prefer to see more continuity in the tail end of the college football season. I’d like to see more games like this played in September and October, and an environment where teams can schedule tougher opponents without fear of being pushed off the national landscape. You only have to lose three games to be a crappy college football team. There’s something wrong with that…

That said, this should be a decent game. I think Alabama will cover the 4, partly because they get calls, but also because I expect Texas’ offense to be out of sync after the long layoff. And I expect a lot of us to get drunk tonight, even though we have to go to work tomorrow, smelling like alcohol. But at least at that point we move on from college football, and quit pretending to care about a game that’s a championship in name only.
