The Broncos Learned What It’s Like To Get A Phone Call From The President

You may not have noticed amidst all the commercials and Beyoncé, but the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50 on Sunday. In addition to the very pretty trophy and the giant rings and the parade, winning the Super Bowl comes with one big perk: meeting the president of the United States. But in order to do that, first you have to have an awkward phone call setting up the meeting.

When the U.S. Women’s soccer team won the World Cup, they received the same treatment: Barack Obama calls the coach and one star player to dole out some congratulations — in this case, it was Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak and outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware trading small talk and confirming that yes, they were still on to come to the White House to get congratulated (and possibly roasted) by the commander in chief.

Before the exchange of info, the president couldn’t help but reference his Chicago fandom, comparing the Broncos’ fearsome defense with the legendary ’85 Bears squad. It’s high praise, and deservedly so for the monsters who made Cam Newton look ordinary. And Ware, at 33, was at the forefront, which may have been why he got the exclusive pleasure of speaking with Obama. He also made up one of the least catchy slogans we’ve ever heard: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can teach it to be consistent.” We’ve got a feeling that won’t be going on a bumper sticker anytime soon.
