That lovely young lady pictured above is 25-year old Tieja MacLaughlin, who is reportedly a “freelance news and sports reporter” in British Columbia, and I’m willing to bet that, like me, you’ve never heard of her before. But thanks to some interesting (alleged) decisions on how to better market herself, MacLaughlin could soon become a household name, at least to young girls everywhere who want to know what not to do when both trying to make a name for oneself in journalism and dating an athlete.

According to the Tri-City Herald, MacLaughlin apparently didn’t handle the news that her boyfriend, a minor league hockey player named Jackson Playfair (awesome athlete name), had dated another woman. Playfair was recently traded from the Spokane Chiefs to the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League, causing some turbulence and distance in their relationship, and now he’s more notable because his girlfriend was arrested for threatening to kill him.

According to Kennewick police and documents, Playfair told police at 2:30 a.m. Saturday that he has been in a dating relationship with MacLaughlin since July, but said “it has been a rocky one.”

MacLaughlin learned Friday that her boyfriend had been with someone else, and told him over the phone that she was on her way to Kennewick, court documents said.

During that call, she told Playfair that “he would be dead by the end of the night,” documents said. (Via the Tri-City Herald)

Police told MacLaughlin that she needs to stop contacting Playfair immediately, but if we know anything from years of cultivating the “Chicks Who Date Athletes” tag, these kids are going to be wrapped up in each other’s lives for years to come. That is, of course, until she ends up dating Paul Bissonnette or Dwight Howard.
