Much like last year — especially in the opinion many people on the Internet — Fargo is ready to soon ride into town and steal any and all thunder from True Detective. But much like season two of HBO’s police drama, it’s going to be hard to top season one of Fargo.
Billy Bob Thornton crafted a memorable and terrifying killer in Lorne Malvo, Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks provided some innocent flavor to their police work (the kind missing from McConaughey and Harrelson), and the season just moved from great moment to great moment in a way that stole a lot of the steam HBO had going into the awards season.
So can season two top it or at least replicate the quality? We have an all-star cast including Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst, and Jeffrey Donovan armed with a stun baton. There’s also enough down home, folksy flavor to smother even the hardest man or woman in sweet molasses.
It’s just hard not to be excited. Season one was a surprise to start given its connection to the Coen Brothers film, but it quickly poised itself as separate and equal. This time around I get a similar vibe with a little bit of Justified season two thrown in for good measure (Jean Smart looks to be playing the Mags Bennett of the North).
