Here’s one for all you hippies and nerds trying to win the Solar Car challenge; Boeing has just announced that it’ll be putting out a super-efficient solar cell with an average conversion rate of 39%.
For those wondering why this is such a big deal, basically, the more efficient a solar cell is, the more electricity it generates and the more Earth-friendly it actually is. This means pretty much anything that runs on solar cells will get more free power for the buck. Boeing created it for satellites, but then realized that people actually cared about the environment, so they’re hitting the market this year.
And, like all good technology, Boeing’s working to make it obsolete: their goal is over 40% conversion as an average in 2011.
