Man, Hugo Weaving just keeps building up nerd cred. It’s not enough that he was Agent Smith in The Matrix, but he’s also been Elrond (Lord of the Rings) and Megatron (those god-awful Transformers movies). And it looks like Weaving’s secured yet another position in the geek film pantheon as the Hollywood Reporter’s Heatvision blog is reporting that Hugo Weaving is in final talks to play former bellhop and current Captain America baddie The Red Skull in The First Avenger: Captain America. Frankly, this sounds great to me – Weaving’s definitely knows how to be menacing and the Red Skull is definitely a character that can slip into ridiculous-over-the-top-acting very easily. Case in point: The Red Skull from the 1990’s Captain America movie, which for some reason they made an Italian named Tadzio De Santis…presumably to avoid insulting Nazis. Try to imagine this in a current Marvel film:

Just about anything would be an improvement. [Heatvision via Slashfilm]
