Currently on a hunger strike in protest of Marvel scraping Inhumans off their release slate? Marvel Studios prez Kevin Feige is here to hold up a big ol’ submarine sandwich in your face. (Or a turd sandwich if you were happy to see this property get the boot.) The big screen adaptation isn’t as dead as some might imagine, according to Feige.
Speaking with the Empire Film Podcast, Feige insists that the reason Inhumans was yanked off the Phase 3 schedule is because Phase 3 was just too darn packed with properties. It’d be inhuman (but not Inhuman®) to wedge it in, he explained.
“The only situation right now is that [Inhumans] is not gonna be a part of Phase 3 because Phase 3 increased in a very good way since we initially announced. When and where and how it pops up remains to be seen, but it’s characters we love, it’s a storyline we love, and we just didn’t want to cram it into an already quite full Phase 3.”
Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole (who also has the sparkling words The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story on his résumé) is the talent tasked with the script and it sounds like Phase 4 is this movie’s landing spot if/when it does hit theaters. That means we’re about four plus years away from Inhumans in movie form.
Shifting into news dealing with movies set to arrive before the decade’s through, Feige also provided an update on how much Natalie Portman we’ll be seeing in Thor: Ragnarok. The answer? None, apparently. The character of Jane Foster will not be appearing in the movie (at least in a non-cameo capacity) and that’s thanks to the setting of the third Thor film.
“There are only a couple scenes on Earth in this movie,” shared Feige. “The majority, 90 … 5 percent of the movie, takes place in the cosmos.”
Don’t mourn the loss of Portman too much. Tessa Thompson is coming aboard and we all loved her in Creed so that spells good things. Also, we live in an age where Marvel can have a Phase 4 to their cinematic universe and no one thinks that’s a weird fever dream. You’re spoiled, comic book movie enthusiasts. That’s what you are.
