Listen To Car Seat Headrest And Smash Mouth Finally Cover Each Other’s Songs

Update: Car Seat Headrest uploaded his cover of Smash Mouth’s “Fallen Horses” to Soundcloud on February 21st. Listen to it below.

For most of us, tweeting about your favorite musicians has few consequences beyond giving your followers one more post to scroll past. If you’re Smash Mouth, though, it leads to one of the least expected collaborations of 2018.

Last year, the band hopped on Twitter and praised Car Seat Headrest’s “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales” as one of the best songs of 2016, and after the band’s Will Toledo took notice, the two had a friendly back and forth. Not long after that, Toledo said he was “hoping that something will happen with that in the future” in terms of a collaboration, suggesting that the bands covering each other’s songs is a possibility.

Now it has actually happened: It was announced a couple days ago that Smash Mouth has covered “Something Soon” and Car Seat Headrest performed “Fallen Horses,” and those recordings premiered on Jenny Eliscu’s SiriusXMU show. Toledo and Smash Mouth’s Greg Camp joined Eliscu for a conversation about the covers, and Camp said that once he had heard of Car Seat Headrest, he was impressed by Toledo’s lyricism:

“His lyrics are just amazing. That’s always the main thing I go for the artists that I listen to. His automatically grab you, you know, they pull you in. Whereas with Smash Mouth, the music might grab some people, and then you start listening to the lyrics and go, ‘Oh, that’s a little darker than it sounds.’ I like to think that he and I have some things in common in that way.”
