Plenty has been written about the premiere episode of SNL, including Alec Baldwin’s fantastic Donald Trump take. But Margot Robbie is the true star of the premiere, as noted in this week’s Scorecard. Sure, she flubbed a bit and nearly broke — understandable considering the presence of Kate McKinnon — but it was a fairly entertaining episode, making me question those early reviews.
And while the show poked fun at Robbie’s looks later in the show with the sexy librarian sketch, the real attempt came with the first sketch of the night. Live Report is the perfect opening sketch because it keeps the premise simple and has laughs for everybody, softening them up for the rest of the show. It also leans heavily on Kenan Thompson, something we know is the sign of a good sketch at this point. The idea is that a news broadcast is tossing to a report on a sinkhole in the Tampa area, interviewing a couple at the scene. One is a nerdy guy wearing crocs with socks and the other is Margot Robbie.
The reactions are top notch, especially when Kenan tosses to said crocs, and the entire thing has enough funny lines to keep you chuckling throughout. It’ll be a sad day when Kenan leaves SNL and I can only hope he goes on to stick around elsewhere once that day comes.
