Jennifer Aniston’s Emirates Ad Reminds Us That Flying Coach Is Miserable

A plane without a shower? What a nightmare! At least, that’s what Jennifer Aniston’s new Emirates Airlines ad seems to imply. Aniston, who signed a $5 million contract with the airline in August, pokes fun at U.S. carriers in her ad, pointing out their general lack of on-board showers and — gasp — bars.

Emirates, a relative newcomer to the U.S. airfare market, seems to be taking shots at the general nightmarish non-extravagance of U.S. airlines (which, okay, they have a point) in order to break into the market with their luxury niche offering. It doesn’t hurt having Rachel from Friends as the face of the new campaign.

Is it convincing? Yes. That cabin looks pretty freaking delightful. But there’s just one problem: most of us can’t exactly afford the cost of the ticket that grants access to the coveted bar and shower. A quick search on Emirates.com for a mid-week flight from New York to Dubai in January yielded a ticket costing $12,950. Yes. You read that right: nearly thirteen-thousand bucks for access to the in-flight VIP experience.

But hey, Emirates, if it works for you then that’s A-okay. We’re just going to stick with our cheap airfare and hold off on the shower until we land, as horrific as that sounds.
