It was a mournful weekend in the NFL, as superfans/unofficial mascots "Dolfan Denny" (Dolphins) and "Crazy Ray" (Cowboys) both passed away. And by "mournful" I mean "mournful for people who have actually heard of them." I had to wait until today to be sad, when I read the fans' reactions. Here's a Dolphins blogger's take:
For some reason, as a kid, I never liked Dolfan Denny… All I saw was an old guy prancing around behind the bench with tight, white shorts, that really served no purpose.
Touching. You will be missed, Denny. As for Crazy Ray, fans looked back on his exploits as well:
You would also see him at the State Fair doing tricks for tips. He got my stepsister once in around '72 when he told her to grab a hot dog in a brown paper bag and as soon as she reached for it, he started barking like a dog. She was about 10 at the time and it scared the bejeezus out of her.
Ray was 76; Denny was 72. Also passing away this weekend: thousands of my brain cells that really weren't doing anything anyway. They were 28.
