Before the NBA Finals, a lot of basketball fans were joking that, no matter what happens, Anderson Varejao was golden.
Varejao had started the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers then waived him, and he signed with the Golden State Warriors. Ergo, Varejao had played for both teams in the NBA Finals that season, and therefore it was assumed he was getting a ring either way. The Cavs ended up winning, but a funny thing has happened.
According to Cleveland.com, Varejao hasn’t asked for a ring.
He can definitely have a ring if he wants one. He is eligible to get some bling having played 31 games for the Cavaliers this past season. However, Cleveland only intends to send him a ring if he asks. He hasn’t, so he’s without any championship finger jewelry at the moment.
While it’s Varejao’s business whether or not he wants a ring, it would be a shame if he didn’t get one. He played more games with Cleveland than with Golden State during the regular season, and until he was traded had played his entire 12-year career with the Cavaliers. He’s more Cavalier than Warrior, in a way, even if he was with Golden State during the finals.
In the end, if Varejao ends up declining to accept a ring from his old team, leaving a ring on the table, the team over at Uproxx wouldn’t mind having a championship ring. You know, so it doesn’t go to waste.
