Kim McGuire, Best Known As The Iconic ‘Hatchet-Face’ In ‘Cry-Baby,’ Has Died

Kim McGuire, the actress best known for playing the role of Mona “Hatchet-Face” Malnorowski in the 1990 John Waters film Cry-Baby, died Wednesday afternoon at a Florida hospital. She was 60.

McGuire had entered a Florida hospital earlier this week after being diagnosed with pneumonia and was later admitted to ICU. Gene Piotrowsky, her Emmy-winning husband, expressed his sadness Wednesday night, tweeting:

“Today is a very sad day. Kim ‘hatchet face’ McGuire my best friend, and the love of my life past away this afternoon. I love you so much.”

TMZ is reporting that McGuire had an adverse reaction to treatments she was receiving at the hospital and suffered two cardiac arrests that led to her death. The Cry-Baby role was McGuire’s first acting role. The cult teen musical famously starred Johnny Depp as a teen able to cry on command.

McGuire went on to be an author and attorney later in life. She detailed her and her husband’s experience of losing all of their belongings and needing to swim to safety during Hurricane Katrina in her book Flashback Katrina: 10 Years Later. The couple eventually rebuilt their lives in Naples, Fla.
