According to a Gallup poll published last week, marijuana legalization is more popular than ever, with 60 percent of Americans supporting it, up from 35 percent in 2005. Recreational marijuana, which is already legal in Colorado and Washington, is on the November ballot in California, Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada. Meanwhile, voters in Arkansas, Florida, Montana, and North Dakota will decide whether to allow for medical marijuana in their states.

Unlike alcohol, which causes 88,000 deaths per year, and cigarettes, which are responsible for 480,000 deaths per year, cannabis is non-toxic and cannot lead to overdose. In fact, scientists believe marijuana may help with side effects related to AIDS/HIV, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, asthma, cancer, chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis. The only known negative side effect of marijuana use seems to be excessive eating, but even that may not make you gain weight if you’re substituting weed use for binge drinking.
