President Obama may be known for his decision-free wardrobe choices, but if there’s one thing he doesn’t care about, it’s the number of almonds he eats before bed at night.
“This is an example of the weird way that the press works,” Obama told Today’s Savannah Guthrie in an interview published today. Obama was clearing up the claim that his bedtime snack of choice was exactly seven almonds, a fact that was published by the New York Times earlier this month:
To stay awake, the president does not turn to caffeine. He rarely drinks coffee or tea, and more often has a bottle of water next to him than a soda. His friends say his only snack at night is seven lightly salted almonds.
“Michelle and I would always joke: Not six. Not eight,” Mr. Kass [the Obama family’s personal chef] said. “Always seven almonds.”
According to Obama, it was a just joke, a playful jab by his wife at his level of discipline, and the fact that he needed to loosen up.
“Sam [Kass] relayed this joke to the New York Times,” Obama told Guthrie, “…and somehow it was relayed as if I was counting out these seven almonds.”
The article was enough to make Obama’s friends call him up and tell him he was being anal about his snack choices. But, he told Guthrie, “Almonds are a good snack…I strongly recommend them.”
And of course, Guthrie asked the question we’re all wondering: “After the White House are you gonna let yourself go and have 10 or 11 almonds?”
Obama’s answer: “Absolutely.”
