Snapchat recently announced a surprising move into wearable technology with Spectacles, a wearable tech item that lets you Snapchat from your face. And now they’re finally on sale, provided you can track down the vending machine that will be the sole way you can buy them, at least for a few months.
The machine itself looks like a knock-off Minion and will be located in spots “where memories are made,” which as of this writing is Venice Beach, CA. The idea is that you walk up to it, and the eye on the front opens. Pick a color, see how they look on your face, and then slide in your credit card to buy the $129 device. Well, if it works, since it’s apparently already broken. Oh, and of course, the specs are already turning up on eBay at inflated prices.
While it’s a neat idea to sell them and a clever way to build hype, it’s not particularly informative about the product itself. For example, these work with Snapchat and only Snapchat, only take video, and while you can charge them in their case on the go, that case has about four charges in it. You also can’t buy accessories independent of the glasses (for now). There’s also the longer-term question of how, precisely, Snapchat can deal with the problems that Google Glass faced when it tried to introduce wearable tech to the consumer market. But, for now, at least there’s a neat vending machine!
