Time to change the formula of all those rainbow drinks. Gone are the days when the only dairy-free alternatives for Starbucks lovers were soy and coconut milk — now, the Holy Trifecta of non-dairy is nearing completion. Come September, almond milk is officially arriving in Starbucks across the nation.
“We created our own almond milk recipe to complement our hot, iced and frappuccino-blended beverages,” said Starbucks’ beverage R&D team manager Yoke Wong. “It was designed so that when steamed, it creates a rich foam for hot beverages and is delicious and creamy when served in cold beverages.”
This follows last year’s addition of coconut milk to the Starbucks menu. Apparently, almond milk was the number one requested product via My Starbucks Idea, the company’s platform for crowdsourced suggestions from baristas and customers.
Which makes total sense. With companies like Ben & Jerry’s offering almond milk-based dairy-free ice cream alternatives, the nut is definitely having its moment (although it takes a sh*t ton of water to grow). According to the press release, 58 percent of adults consume non-dairy milk — and almond milk is the most popular among non-dairy options, holding 60 percent of the market share.
Are people thrilled about the news? You betcha. Just check out some of the reactions to Starbucks’ tweet:

Starbucks is definitely selling their special almond milk blend, too: According to Wong, the milk is unflavored, and has light notes of almond. The blend also includes almond butter, which adds body and complements espresso’s…roastiness. Customers who want their drink made with almond milk will have to pay a 60 cent upcharge for it.
What’s next from Starbucks? We vote roach milk.
