Uber hasn’t been getting the best press lately. Insane surge pricing, drivers pulling middle school pranks, and murder. However, the ride-on-demand giant just settled its case with its drivers for a paltry $100 million. That means Uber drivers are still private contractors and Uber gets to keep their business model. What does that mean for you? Well, because of the settlement, Uber drivers will now be allowed to ask for tips. As in, you better tip your Uber driver or they will destroy your passenger rating. No longer can you get a perfect rating by being a half-way decent human by not destroying a stranger’s car with your bodily fluids. Now you have to show your driver some cash. This could be an issue for most people who do not carry cash with them and preferred the cashless experience that Uber used to have in place.
Other ride services have always included the option to tip. Lyft asks if you would like to add a tip after your ride, and it’s always customary to tip your taxi driver, hairstylist, bartender, server, dog walker, champagne room exotic dancer… you get the idea. So next to your Uber app, you should put a handy-dandy tip calculator, because you’ll be needing it.
