Travis Barker has been busy in the public eye lately. His bandmates in Blink-182 just announced that a new album might be on the way. The drummer is also promoting a memoir entitled Can I Say, and in conjunction, discussed his traumatic recovery from a 2008 plane crash with Good Morning America.

In the GMA segment, Barker recalled how he sustained severe burns on more than 65 percent of his body when the plane he was in crashed after takeoff. “The plane’s on fire, my hands are on fire. I unbuckled my seatbelt, and I jump right into the jet, which holds all the fuel. I basically ignite my whole body,” he explained.

Barker had to undergo 27 surgeries while recovering. The pain was so bad (“That feels like hell” are Barker’s specific words) that it drove him to asking friends to put him out of his misery: “I would call friends of mine and go, ‘Yo, I’ll deposit a million dollars into whoever’s bank account.'”

Barker was also clearly holding back his tears when he recalled his son drawing a plane crash in school. “I mean–he was old enough to understand, you know?” he said. The drummer hasn’t stepped foot on a plane since the accident, but will do so when his children are ready to fly.
