Sometimes working in a restaurant is the pits. But those of us who work in the service industry also read stories featuring high-rolling customers, excess tipping, and patrons like George Bush and Amy Schumer all the time, so we hold out hope that all the fake smiling and specials-reading will one day pay off. Well, for one Colorado server it finally did. For a second.
Over the weekend, a server at Thailicious, a Bangkok-style Thai restaurant in Edgewater, CO received a $1,088 tip on a $60 bill. The waiter who’d served the super-tipper was obviously happy and said he’s read plenty of stories about tips just like his, though those were usually never more than a couple hundred dollars.
One of the restaurant’s owners, Bee Anantatho, told the Denver Post that the server picked up the checkbook which was full of cash and brought it straight to her. After counting out the tip and chatting with the staff, Anantatho decided to wait to cash it out.
That was a wise decision on the owner’s part, because the very next day at precisely the moment the restaurant opened, the super-tipper was there to explain. Not surprisingly, he was drunk and didn’t realize that he’d put every dollar he had in the checkbook. A few of the 100 dollar bills he left were mistaken for 1’s and he was hoping to get his money back.
Thailicious graciously reimbursed the customer, who in turn left $100 to cover his meal. That’s still a generous $40 tip!
And here’s a generous tip for the rest of us: Don’t go out drinking with an exorbitant amount of cash.
