For surfers, “Jaws” is more than just the name of a movie. But much like the Spielberg classic, it too has the power to make even the best surfers afraid to go back into the water.
“Jaws” is a surf break off the coast of Maui. Also known locally as “Pe’ahi”, the break regularly sets big-wave records during the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave contest held annually. Tom Dosland was surfing it this past Wednesday when the swells got particularly big, and tried to get in on this monster:

Dosland somehow survived with merely a stiff neck, though his board (which you can see in the clip get initially blown over the wave and then yanked back into it by the leash on Dosland’s leg) got destroyed. And somehow, despite feeling lucky to be alive after that spill, Dosland was back out catching waves at Jaws the next day. As he told Surfer Magazine, sometime’s it’s best to just get back on the horse:
You surfed Jaws again the next day?
Yeah, I got a few the next day. Nothing really special, but I got a couple. It felt good to get one for sure. I was riding a borrowed board at that point and wasn’t really feeling it. Plus, my neck was really stiff, but it was good for me to be back out there.
You get after it, Tom. We’ll stick to tackling six-footers on boogie boards next summer at the shore, thanks.
