When you’ve dropped a chart-topper and rocked the ESPY’s, labels will increase production values, as evidenced by the shimmering assortment of production on B.O.B’s Strange Clouds. Bobby Ray still raps, but his pop sensibilities pay for the plush here. Morgan Freeman narrates “Bombs Away” with dramatic aplomb matched by a busy beat. Nicki Minaj makes a lively cameo on the drunk-synth wobble of “Out Of My Mind.” The album sounds soaring, but at times too decadent: sometimes it buries Bob’s homespun charm, which was easier to spot when he was still looking up at the sky, plotting his ascendance.

Standout Songs: “Strange Clouds,” “So Good,” “Out Of My Mind”

Ones To Skip: “Arena,” “Both of Us,” “Play For Keeps”
