Lil Wayne – Dedication 4 Mixtape

Dedication 4 represents a new page in the book of Lil Wayne. Admittedly, the current pages read awkwardly, at least from the outside looking in. Weezy’s gone from stone cold Blood to reformed convict turned skater, leading his #DEWeezy movement and encouraging fans to do what makes them happy. Only a few weeks ago, Wayne announced that “rap is taking a backseat to skating” and “my fans deserve some peace from me.”

But what more can we, as fans, expect from an artist who literally has seen everything – both the good and the bad – the music business has to offer over a career that started around the time he was picking up his driver’s license? Maybe fans do need a break but he definitely deserves one and, no, prison doesn’t count.

So here we stand at D4, which could be his potentially be his last offering for a while to come. Even though there have been flashes of greatness, his most recent output has been a mixed bag that shows that his heart and head haven’t been into music as much as they should be for an entertainer who worked his way into not just the upper ranks of rap but music as a whole. If the tape is the last complete project we do get, let’s hope it’s a testament to the Louisianimal who tore beats to shreds and not the shell of his former self.
