One of the most well-known Scientology escapees is Leah Remini, who appeared on Saved by the Bell in the ’90s and starred on The King of Queens. In a reunion special on OWN, Remini talked about why she decided to leave the church, and it was not just a matter of realizing how crazypants Scientology was. As it turns out, Remini was raised in the church by her mother, and she didn’t know there was a different way to live until realizing what it was taking her away from:
“I don’t think people know the amount of dedication it takes to be in this organization…
“I was at one of these hotels in Florida, and I saw my daughter swimming for the first time while I’m reading this [Scientology coursework],” she recalled. “And a tear came down my face. And I was like, ‘What am I doing?'”
Not only did she leave, but so did her whole family. And, as you may recall, Remini has been outspoken about the church since leaving in 2013, especially when she had the ‘nads to file a missing persons report for the wife of the head of Scientology, David Miscavige. Naturally, the church feels the need to defend itself every time someone talks about them in a slightly disparaging way. But what’s funny about this time around is that Remini didn’t say anything particularly disparaging. She gave her own personal reasons for leaving that had nothing to do with Shelly Miscavige, so this seems like an incongruently bitchy statement to provide in response:
“Given Leah Remini’s insatiable desire for attention, it comes as no surprise that for two years she has been incapable of moving on with her life and remains obsessed with shamelessly exploiting her former religion in a pathetic attempt to get publicity.”
Jeez, a little “protesty-too-muchy” if you ask me.
