CBS analyst and radio show host Doug Gottlieb isn’t known for thoughtful examination of social issues. He once went on a weird tangent about Ashley Judd’s age. Gottlieb also chided Kobe Bryant for his “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirt. And he awkwardly claimed to bring a “white man’s perspective” and diversity to CBS Sports.
This week, Gottlieb found himself perplexed by Caitlyn Jenner’s emergence. The CBS analyst awkwardly talked the issue out with himself on the radio this week. Gottlieb (who needs help with proper pronoun usage) draws a weak analogy between his own receding hairline and Caitlyn’s emergence:
“Caitlyn Jenner, which is the former Bruce Jenner. I was thinking about this. Look, I’m not trying to say it’s not brave, what he has done. It is, okay. On the other hand, there is a certain contradiction of sorts, isn’t there? Like, something about yourself, or about your body. Like, are we just okay, cut-cut, snip-snip, changing it? Am I the only one thinking this? Like, do you guys think I like my nose? You think I like where my hairline’s going? The answer is ‘no.’ But it’s like having the self confidence to overcome or to believe in myself. Like, inside of Bruce Jenner was a woman. Well, inside of Doug Gottlieb is a guy with a beautiful, full head of hair. And a much better nose. A deeper voice as well. And a jump shot that never misses. The outside doesn’t look like that. That, to me, is the hardest part of the conversation. How you look is good enough, that’s how God made you.
“It’s a fascinating conversation starter, but I think there’s so many different levels of the conversation that simply going, like, ‘brave,’ is kind of a lame conversation ender. There’s a lot more to it.”
Gottlieb wasn’t done talking about Caitlyn. Here’s another clip where he says bringing attention to a cause is the same as a rating ploy. He believes ESPN will only give the Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Jenner to make money from sponsors.
