Bone broth is the in-thing amongst the Paleo-aware these days. “This is essentially grandma’s remedy for everything—from a broken heart to a broken bone,” Katherine Harvey told Food Business News last year. She’s not kidding. Kobe Bryant is among the ranks of superstars who swear by the stuff—he’s been incorporating bone broth into every meal for years.
Bone broth is essentially just soup stock — if you’re making your stock properly, with real bones. The bones are simmered for anywhere from 12 to 48 hours. That simmering is what makes all the difference, drawing out all the nutrients, minerals, gelatin, collagen and amino acids from the bones.
“It’s a health beverage,” Harvey said. “That’s how people are viewing it now.”
Which is why it should come as no surprise to anyone that it’s now going to be available in everyone’s favorite grab-and-go format, the K-cup. Yep. Bone broth K-cups.
Launched at the Winter Fancy Foods Show in San Francisco, the bone broth is available from retailer LonoLife in both beef and chicken form. They also sell “snack” broths (read: not bone), which come in chicken, vegetable, and cream of mushroom flavors.
The biggest selling point on the bone broth K-cups, other than the easy-access 8 to 10 grams of protein per $2 serving, is the fact that the cups are 100% recyclable. “We felt that was an important feature,” national sales manager Brian Hoppe told Food Business News. In a time when many are questioning the impact K-cups make on the environment — including the very inventor of the product — it definitely is.
The K-cups are available for purchase off of LonoLife’s website. No word yet on Paleo reactions to the packaged superfood — but you better believe that yoga parents are going to buy the hell out of these.
