Passengers in the Atlantic Ocean were in for a huge scare when a cruise ship ended up sailing into the heart of a massive hurricane on Sunday. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, but regrettably, the ordeal was totally preventable.
According to the Washington Post, the hurricane had been forecasted for several days. It “exploded in intensity,” when it hit the warm waters off the Gulf Coast. The captain of the cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, tried to steer out of the hurricane’s path, but waited too long to turn.
The ship had been traveling from New York City to Florida. Here’s a terrifying sounding dispatch from a passenger:
Captain said they are in communication with the coast guard, struggling to point ship into wind but can’t move forward. All passengers told to stay in cabins; water entered ship on upper decks, large white structure broke off top of ship, landed in pool.
Four people were hurt, though thankfully nobody was critically injured. The vessel, which can hold 4,000 passengers, took some damage, but is capable of sailing back to New Jersey.
Everybody will get a full refund, and 50 percent off on their next cruise, if they ever feel like tempting fate once again.
