Eddie Izzard Completes His Insane ’27 Marathons In 27 Days’ Challenge

Make no mistake, Eddie Izzard is a madman. We knew this already, but he spent nearly a month on his frigging feet for an absolutely insane “27 Marathons in 27 Days” challenge. The comedian chose the number of races to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela’s 27 years in prison, and the goal was a challenge by any stretch. However, Sunday consisted of two marathons in one day, as Izzard was playing catchup after landing in the hospital on the fifth day. Most of the time when folks hit the emergency room, they rest.

All of this madness was for a good cause, of course, because Izzard’s not crazy enough to complete such a grueling task for the hell of it. Izzard raised $1.95 million for Sports Relief by putting one foot in front of the other. He doesn’t appear to have fallen on his face at any point, which is remarkable (since that happens every time this lady runs a marathon). In this video, the ultimate weekend warrior discusses his feelings before Sunday’s double marathon. Spoiler alert: He’s feeling pretty crappy.

Izzard is 54 years old but went further than most people would dream of doing for charity. Writing a check is simple if one has disposable income, but dropping everything and embarking upon a month-long jog (to inspire others to write checks) is an altogether different feat. He covered at least 707 miles (probably more, unless he runs tangents like a pro, and few people do).

Izzard offered only a few reflective words when his task was complete: “It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Thank you to everyone who has donated. Don’t do this at home.” He also humbly requested water.

Along the way, Izzard took many selfies with excited fans. Let’s hope he gets some restorative sleep over the next 27 days.
