The Best Party Bill Murray Ever Crashed Is The Best Answer In His Reddit AMA

On Wednesday evening, Bill Murray promoted Rock the Kasbah in the least Bill Murray way. He sat down behind a keyboard and either tapped out some answers or used a Siri-like device to dictate. Sadly, Murray’s delightfully deadpan sense of humor did not translate fully into the Reddit AMA medium, where he was fielding questions from many thousands of admirers.

Murray isn’t a tech-oriented guy. He’s about to star in his own Netflix Christmas special, while also telling Jimmy Kimmel how he’s never watched Netflix before in his life. He’s not into Internet-related gadgets. The most sophisticated Murray ever got was to set up a genius 1-800 phone number for himself. The best answer in Murray’s AMA was about his favorite party that he ever crashed:

“Well, we crashed a famous party called the subway party to celebrate the premiere of Tommy, in the 70s. It was Gilda Radner, Belushi, Harold Ramis, Joe Flaherty, Brian Doyle Murray, and we were all plus 1, probably. It was biggest party ever in NYC at the time. You couldn’t get into this party. It was an inner circle thing. It was at an enclosed subway stop, it was a roar. It was a scream. If you made an airport movie with everyone on the plane is a celebrity, it was like that times 10. We were doing a show in the restaurant cabaret, the guys catering were the same guys who gave us left over french fries, we went into the backdoor to the subway with everyone. Everyone saying hi, hello. And we felt like we didn’t belong at all. It was so fantastic. I have compassion when people say dumb stuff to me. I said to Andy Warhol ‘I love the soup can’ and he looked at me like ‘You don’t belong here.’ What a time that was.”

A fantastic answer. Legendary Murray would love to be invisible, and he also adores reality shows, specifically Flavor of Love, but that’s not the most bizarre part. Many answers were unreadable, and it wasn’t his fault. HangPotato asked him how he defends Wes Anderson’s works, and here’s the verdict:

With that meandering answer at the ready, Reddit users grew upset over the firing of Victoria Taylor, who organized, moderated, and edited the celebrity AMAs until July. Compared to Murray’s first AMA in 2014, this AMA seemed “off.” One bit of humor arose here — a BillMurrayTranslator account popped up, so you can “sort of” read what Murray meant to say. Here are some Reddit responses to this AMA:

  • “I just gave up on reading this AMA from maybe my favorite ‘celebrity’ ever. Maybe I will try again tomorrow when I have more patience. This is terrible.”
  • “It’s f*cking painful.”
  • “For real I’ve read it 4 times and still none of it makes any sense.”
  • “This block of text full of typos is just kinda hard to read.”
  • “Barely intelligible word vomit.”

Over at Twitter, reactions were similarly perplexed.
