Despite Star Trek Beyond still being days away from hitting theaters, Paramount is moving ahead with the next entry in the series at warp speed. Last week we heard some chatter that Star Trek 4 was in the works, and that Chris Hemsworth (who played James Kirk’s doomed dad George Kirk in the 2009 Star Trek reboot) would be returning. Well, Paramount has now confirmed the scuttlebutt in a press release.
Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek 4…
“In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s Star Trek, will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine. The remaining cast is expected to return.”
So, from the sounds of it, Hemsworth’s appearance definitely won’t be a mere cameo. This is going to be a full-on, time-traveling, father-son buddy adventure. Honestly, I’m not sure what I think about that – this series really doesn’t need any more time travel, and I foresee Hemsworth totally overshadowing Pine. I mean, no offense to Pine, but come on.
Star Trek 4 will once again be produced by J.J. Abrams and written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the team who originally wrote Star Trek Beyond, before a behind-the-scenes shakeup put Simon Pegg and Doug Jung in charge of the script. No word on a Star Trek 4 director or release date as of yet.
