Back in May, director/writer/podcaster/comic-shop-owner/actor Kevin Smith announced that he would be developing a television series based on the cult film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. His plan was, according to him, to adapt the classic sci-fi action romp over the course of ten episodes. He’ll also reportedly be adapting his film Mallrats the same way and then if granted a second season, finally make Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League – which was first teased in the credits of the original film. The series seems to be moving forward, and Smith recently discussed who he’d like to see direct episodes of the series.
While he’ll be directing a portion of the series, Smith is on the record as not wanting to direct the whole thing. His ideal lineup? “I wanna get the people who loved it as much as me, so people like Richard Kelly, Edgar Wright, I’m gonna reach out to Quentin Tarantino, see if they’ll direct an episode.” He went on to say that he wants people involved in the series that are as big a fan of the original film as him.
Tarantino and Wright are famous for their cinematic geekery and obsessions with the oddball corners of film, so it makes sense that they’d be fans of a movie as bonkers as Banzai. To see them give the original story their own spin, if only for an episode, would be something special. There’s no word yet on when the series will be happening (or even if it definitely will) but if it manages to curate the directorial lineup Smith clearly wants it to, it’ll be something special. Utterly bizarre, but special.
