On Friday, the country was rocked once again by yet another mass shooting. On the morning of the attack, DeWayne Craddock, a long-time employee of the Virginia Beach Department of Public Utilities, reportedly resigned from his position as a government engineer after 15 years on the job, then later returned to the workplace and opened fire on employees.
A total of 12 people died in the attack, as well as Craddock, who was gunned down by police in what’s been described as a lengthy shootout. Authorities are still trying to make sense of what Craddock’s motive may have been, but one thing is clear, and it’s that the incident has once again amplified the call for increased gun control in America.
Steve Kerr has long been an outspoken proponent of stricter legislation and the lawmakers who support it, and prior to Game 2 on Sunday, he wore a “Vote for Our Lives” t-shirt to the pre-game presser, where he again called on those in the political sphere to take long-overdue action.

“Actually, I wasn’t aware that he was coming until a little while ago,” Kerr said. “The shirt has everything to do with the tragedy in Virginia Beach a couple days ago, and how devastated so many families are and so many people are. The shirt is a reminder that the only way we can get out of this mess is to actually vote, and to vote for people who are going to be willing to create some change in our gun laws in our country.
“The young generation, the March For Our Lives generation, has really inspired me. So I offer my support to them and to all young people, and hope that we can create a change where we don’t all have to walk around scared we’re going to get shot in our country.”
The “he” that Kerr is referring to is President Barack Obama, who was expected to be in attendance in Toronto for Game 2. Steph Curry and numerous other stars around the NBA have also been vocal supporters of new gun control legislation, though little progress has been made as we continue to see the types of horrific events like the one that unfolded on Friday without much urgency on the matter from those in charge.
