This Brent Jones Fan Seems Healthy

When former 49ers tight end Brent Jones agreed to do a signing at a Sports Authority in San Francisco, he didn’t expect a fanboy to show up to recite an epic poem in his honor. That’s the kind of thing that tends to go down around Tom Rathman. Much more lyrical of a player. Yet that’s what happened to Jones recently. Just comes with the territory when you’re a household name like Brent Jones. Also, I assume that is the type of person who still shops at a Sports Authority.

The poem is really quite a production. Not only is it longer than five minutes, but the author has to power through the store employee pleas to stop. Sorry guys, this man has a lot of love to give and a lot of ground to cover. The poem not only touches on Brent’s college and pro football accomplishments, but it also gets into his post-football business ventures. Quite a labor of love. Dark, dank, basement dungeon love. To be fair, the poem does get a little bogged down in all the details and stat lines of specific games, but it builds to this thundering conclusion:

As a top-notch tight end
Brent Jones would block and score
For the 49ers, he wore
Number 84

Really, Brent had to leave immediately after that as a sign of respect to the artist. Not at all because it was creepy. [Shreds draft of Eric Green poem]
