These Decade-Old Notes A 9-Year-Old Wrote To SpongeBob Squarepants Are Amazing

Fandom is a complicated thing to unpack as a tween. I say this as a human being that had a weird (yet all-consuming) crush on Max’s cousin from Goof Troop. She was my world, dude. Anyway, it can sometimes be strange to come across something tween superfan you created when looking from a grown-up’s perspective.

18-year-old Irish student Jack Rowe was a massive SpongeBob Squarepants devotee growing up. In 2007, he had a SpongeBob focused diary and naturally feelings about the program poured onto the page. The diary was recently rediscovered by Jack’s brother Tom and the results are FASCINATING. As required by the laws of this era, the unearthed treasure was quickly ushered onto the internet.

Mentally unstable? We’ll be the judge of that. Let’s start with the marvellous cover which promises Jack and Bob and even has those lovable pals having a ball right over Mickey Mouse’s obscured face. ART!

Next up is a page dedicated to telling SpongeBob that Jack is ultimate SpongeBob fan. Sure, Fiona and Alan might be into SBSP, but JACK IS THE TOPS!

Things take a bit of a turn when Jack confesses that he wishes he were yellow and suggests that he’d like to drill holes in himself. We recommend consulting with a physician first, Jack.

There’s even room in the diary to talk to SpongeBob about Squidward’s attitude. He’s right, Squidward is a bit of a grumpalump. Jack doesn’t seem optimistic Squidward will ever be happy.

Did you ever have a diary like this growing up? Confess in the comments and all will be forgiven. (Well, within reason. This isn’t international waters.)
