Will “Jurassic World” be the no. 1 movie for three weeks in a row? It's gonna be close, but right now Joy and Sadness have the upper hand.
On Friday, “Inside Out” snuck by “Jurassic” for no. 1 with $14.9 million. That puts the critically acclaimed Disney release at a stellar $147.8 million in just eight days. “Inside Out” should earn another $48-50 million for its second frame which is almost exactly what Universal's blockbuster is looking at.
Chris Pratt's latest hit came in just behind “Inside” with another $14.7 million for a monstrous $460.5 million to date. The fourth installment in the “Jurassic” franchise should become only the fourth movie to cross $500 million sometime on Monday. And, yes, “Jurassic World” is now the no. 1 movie of 2015 surpassing “Avengers: Age of Ultron's” $451.2 million tally. Globally, the Colin Tervorrow directed flick has earned $1.04 billion, the second billion dollar grosser for Universal this year after “Furious 7.”
Trying to recapture some past glory in the third spot was Seth MacFarlane's “Ted 2.” The raunchy comedy took in $13.2 million on Friday for what looks like a $34-36 million three-day. That's significantly behind the $54.4 million the first “Ted” opened to three years ago. Like a few other studios, however, Universal may have misjudged how much its own “Jurassic” and Pixar's latest releases would affect the marketplace. “Ted 2” probably won't come close to the original's $218 million U.S. cume, but it will easily be another $100 million grosser for the studio and star Mark Wahlberg.
The weekend's other new release, “Max,” debuted with $4.3 million. The low-budget family film looks like it will perform beyond pre-release expectations with a $13-15 million weekend.
“Spy” rounded out the top five with another $2.1 million and $82.6 million to date. The Melissa McCarthy comedy should get to $100 million, but 20th Century Fox is going to need to hold onto theaters to get it there.
