Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor is a fight that keeps coming up, despite the fact that the two compete in different combat sports and Floyd is notoriously difficult to work out deals with. But here we are, days away from Conor McGregor’s stunning defeat of Eddie Alvarez making him the only fighter to hold two UFC belts simultaneously, and we’re still talking about Floyd versus Conor.
Floyd Mayweather admitted a while ago that he was the one that actually started rumors that a fight could happen. But now he seems over the idea, and recently flipped out at a reporter that called Conor the Mayweather of MMA. For McGregor’s part, he seems willing … so long as the price is right.
“Tell Floyd and Showtime I’m coming,” he yelled at a UFC 205 afterparty. “Tell him to go to them Showtime offices. I want $100 million cash to fight you under boxing rules cause he’s afraid of a real fight.”
“Floyd’s not ready for this!” the brash Irish fighter declared. “Much respect to Floyd, he’s a solid businessman. What he has been able to do, he’s a f**king animal at what he’s been able to do. But as far as real fighting? As far as true, pure unarmed combat? Floyd don’t want none of this!”
He’s probably right. The only way Floyd will fight McGregor is in a pure boxing match, and even then Mayweather would probably also insist McGregor gets a substantially smaller cut of the purse because his ego won’t allow for any other kind of agreement. Meanwhile, we have to wonder why we never hear about a much more realistic option. Manny Pacquiao is already out of retirement and probably much more willing to agree to whatever terms wash the stank off his career that his snoozer of a fight against Floyd left. But we guess it’s a testament to Floyd that the world can’t stop bringing his name into things when discussing the biggest fighter in the world.
